The Ultimate Container Gardener: All You Need to Know to Create Plantings for Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter
Published in Hardcover by Lorenz Books (September, 2001)
Author: Stephanie Donaldson
Average review score:

Pretty and inspiring
Lots of great ideas here-- interesting color and plant combinations, and a wide variety of containers. They are grouped into different categories, such as different seasons, edible plantings, even a section of kids' projects. The photos are beautiful, and the directions are very clear, with photos of each step. There's not a lot of advice on how to care for plants, the emphasis is on matching the plants to the containers.

A word of warning: If you already own a container gardening book by this author, check inside before you buy! I have seen this book with three different covers, all with different titles. "The Complete Guide to Container Gardening" (also available on Amazon) is the same book inside, but there is nothing in the item descripton to indicate this.

The Unfulfilled Indian Summer of 1996
Published in Paperback by Russell Schnieder Enterprises (November, 1996)
Author: Russell Schneider
Average review score:

Great reading for Indians fans
All the hopes we fans in Cleveland had in early 1996 from our fabulous postseason from 1995 that we would win the '96 World Series...from the off-the-field antics and tantrums for that jerk who is now on the Baltimore Orioles, the trades of Eddie Murray and Carlos Baerga, and the fire and excitement of veteran Kevin Seitzer. Another great novel from Russ Schneider...only if he'd write a book about the Indians' 1997 season!!! (Are you listening, Mr. Schneider? :))

Voices of a Summer Day
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (January, 1985)
Average review score:

Lyrical Memories of an Ordinary Man
Author Irwin Shaw doesn't strike a single false note as he takes the reader through the memories and daydreams of an ordinary man. The story's hero remembers with gentleness and humor the incidences of his boyhood and early life, including his war experiences and long marriage, that guided and shaped him into manhood. He struggles to understand how it can be that others -- some more deserving, others less -- managed to become 'members' of that elusive club: those who find meaning in their lives and a sense of connectedness to their families. Brilliantly written with insight, nostalgia and a self-deprecating humor, VOICES OF A SUMMER DAY illuminates not just the events, hopes and reactions of a single man, but of an entire generation.

The warm summer

A book of life, love, and the cooling autumn breeze
This book influenced my life growing up. It's about a boy who lives in the country and the adventures he has. If you enjoyed Tom Sawyer, you'll enjoy this book. There are some very sad parts, some action, but in the end everything works out for the most part. It's published by Zondervan, so it's high quality and doesn't have any bad parts. I'd recommend it to anyone who has a comfortable chair and a weekend coming up.

This book belongs on every teenagers bookshelf. I loved it then and I'll read it again and again now! (I'm 27!) For the parent, this book is clean but exciting, in the best tradition of books.

Watermelon Summer: A Journal.
Published in Textbook Binding by Lippincott (October, 1971)
Author: Jeffrey, Golden
Average review score:

Very Good. Honestly and smartly written.
Fascinating account of a Harvard student who goes to the South and finds himself in a very different culture. Honest and introspective insights in which the author contrast his expectations with his realizations of Georgia in 1970.

West of Yesterday, East of Summer: New and Selected Poems (1973-1993)
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (September, 1994)
Author: Paul Monette
Average review score:

Powerfully Lyrical Poems...
Many of the poems in this book are (by nature of their topic) full of feeling to the point where any gay man will be brought to tears. Monette's poems have powerful imagery and a lyrical quality like that of dreams and nightmares.

The "Elegies for Rog" were written during the death and dying of Monette's partner during his bout with AIDS and will serve as comfort and empowerment to anyone in the face of despair.

After having fallen in love with Monette's poetry, I later came across his autobiography, "Becoming a Man : Half a Life Story." It brings out topics prevalent in homosexuality and coming of age which are too often supressed by the mistakenly common 'gay lifestyle.'

As a poet, I highly recommend both of these books.

When Summer Comes
Published in Paperback by Millivres Books (January, 2001)
Author: William Maltese
Average review score:

Bigger IS Better!
For those of us who find ALL of William Maltese's right-on short stories (CALIFORNIA CREAMIN' and SUMMER SWEAT), must-reading, we have here, with WHEN SUMMER COMES, all of the good things of his shorter formats in an enjoyable, larger, bigger, genuinely enjoyable novel-length sexual romp that takes us from the east coast of Florida, to the west coast of California, and several states (including the big "T" for Texas) in between, throwing in Hawaii for good measure ... with Maltese's trademark horny hustlers and surfers, exhibitionists and voyeurs, cowboy and Indian, movie and television stars and personalities, along for the doesn't-get-much-better-than-this! ride. While I enjoyed Maltese's mainstream novel (with gay theme), A SLIP TO DIE FOR, and look forward to the rest of that Stud Draqual mystery series, there's just no denying how pleased I am that he didn't forget those of us who not only revel in his more down-to-earth and nitty-gritty erotica but who appreciate his ability to tell a great and sexy story with the occasional hearty dollop of don't-take-this-too-seriously humor. Humor often, I find, sadly lacking in the erotica of writers (who shall remain nameless) who take themselves and their work way tooooooo seriously.
